A Learnership is a SETA approved integrated and comprehensive learning programme that combines theoretical training and practical workplace experience. The structured learning programme falls under both the Skills Development Act and the Skills Levies Act, both of which intend to transform skills development and minimise unemployment. The programme is aimed at addressing the gap between current education and training provided and the needs of the labour market. It promotes purpose-driven education and training for individuals who wish to learn whilst gaining work experience. The completion of a Learnership sees the individual earning a registered qualification, which will assist their job search and opportunities.
For the learner:
A Learnership allows you, the learner, to gain on-the-job experience as well as innovative theoretical experience. Whilst completing a Learnership you will be guaranteed a fixed-term employment contract as well as a ‘learner allowance’ for the duration of your training. Once your training is complete and you have been successful, you will be issued a nationally recognised qualification, which will assist you in future job searching endeavours.
For the employer:
Learnerships are structured around existing skill needs in the economic sector ensuring relevance and productivity. Hiring an individual that has completed a Learnership ensures that you, the employer, are gaining a workplace ready employee with a well-developed skill set that needs no further training. This, therefore, improves productivity and the working environment at large. Learnerships are nationally recognised. BEE scorecard points can be additionally earned when hiring a graduate who has completed a Learnership successfully. Learnerships further enhance business benefits with tax incentives and grants, afforded by the SETAS.
